Web Design Purchasing Guide

Having a website for your company is a must these days.  With more and more people going online to find information, it doesn’t matter what industry you are in.  Here are some of the different types of web designs you'll need to consider before launch.

Type of website

Description

Information based

This type of site is very simple and does not have much “flash” to it.  Usually these types of sites have contact information and a description of their company and that is all.

Feature Based

These are the types of websites that will have more content as well as pictures.  Visitors of these types of sites will visit the site for more than just basic information.

E-commerce

As the name suggests, this is for companies who are selling products.  These are the types of sites that will have a list of your products as well as descriptions of all products.  There is usually a shopping cart feature that allows users to select their items and eventually “check out.”

A designer who fits your needs

When you are looking for a web designer it is key to have a basic idea of what you will want in a website.  Most designers are better at designing different types of sites, so make sure you are speaking with the company or person specializing in the features you need. A flash designer might create an aesthetically pleasing site, but won't be able to set up a shopping cart.

Ask to see the designer’s portfolio to get an idea of their style.  If you like what they have in their portfolio chances are you will like what they come up with for your site. Most designers have a typically 'style' and have a hard time moving away from that style. If you operate a bank and the portfolio you review is mostly for salons with cursive font and a color swatch consisting of pinks and yellows, you might want to look around for someone with more B2B examples.

Contracts
In the world of web design you can go one of two ways, with an agency or a freelancer.  Both options are fine, you just need to make sure you go over every detail of the contract before committing to the project.  You need to take into consideration things such as who will have ownership of your site, the costs, and the projected timeline of the project.

All of these considerations are extremely important and you need to make sure you both are in full agreement before anything is signed and sealed.

Once you work out the contract and decided on which look fits your company best, you will be able to come up with a great website for your company and hopefully attain more clients in the process.
